Saint Columba of Iona
This just moved me to tears, so I have to share it with you. It's about one of the most beautiful stories about him, the story of his death:
He knew he would soon die, and also knew when. On the day he was to die, he told his brothers that he was about to leave them, and then went out onto the street to return to the monastery. Halfway there, he took a rest:
“While the Saint, weak with age (...) sat down for a while and rested at that place, behold! the gray horse came, that faithful servant who used to carry the milk pails from the cow pasture to the monastery. As this creature approached the Saint, as wonderful as it may sound, it laid its head on his chest, as I believe by the inspiration of God, before whose sight every animal has a sense of things because the Creator Himself has ordained it so; knowing that its master would soon leave it, and that it would never see his face again, it began to emit lamenting sounds and, as if it were a human, to shed a flood of tears in the Saint's lap and to weep so much that foam appeared at its mouth. When the companion saw this, he tried to drive away the crying, grieving horse, but the Saint stopped him, saying: 'Let him be in peace! Since he loves me so, let him be in peace, that he may pour the tears of his bitterest lamentations upon my breast. Behold! you yourself are human and have a rational soul; you could not in any way know of my death except what I have recently told you myself; but the Creator, in some manner, revealed to this beast, devoid of all reason, that his master is about to leave him.' And as he spoke, he blessed his servant, the horse, and turned to leave them.”
COLUMBA then departed and blessed the island, blessed the granary, blessed the animals, blessed the monks.
